Background: This study aimed at exploring the influence of mathematics self-beliefs on mathematics achievement.

                    Methods: Data was obtained on a random sample of 400 undergraduate students (M=245 and F=155) from three Ethiopian public Universities by using self-reported questionnaire. The instrument, which was adapted from Butler (2016), consists of measures of self-beliefs, expectancy-value, and achievement goal-related motivation. In addition, a 25-item Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) was developed and validated to measure mathematics achievement. The internal consistency reliability of the MAT was found to be high (alpha =0.84). Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were employed to assess systematic relationship between math self-beliefs and math achievement.

                    Results: Results reveal that mathematics self-beliefs have a significant influence on mathematics achievement, whereas expectancy-value and achievement goal have no significant influence on mathematics achievement.

                    Conclusions: Finally, the study outlines the implications for teaching and learning, and research.

Introduction

Learning mathematics requires much effort for students, and the need for effort has led to much research on factors involving motivation and motivational relationships associated with mathematics instruction. According to
                <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-23">Cockcroft (1985)</xref>, it is impossible to live without mathematics as mathematics helps in advancement of science and technology, and it is very important to in everyday life. Due to this reason, Ethiopian higher education is highly focusing on science, engineering and mathematics.
                <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-9">Hembree (1990)</xref>, suggested that the country’s resource which are based on science and technology will also be based on mathematics. Therefore, when students ignore studying mathematics this will gradually erode the country’s resources which is based on science and technology.

Ethiopians were able to use the Application of Mathematics to build the Rock Hewn churches of Lalibela in Northern Ethiopia before 800 years ago. They used top to down direction which is usually called the reverse engineering. That is they imagined how the doors, windows and walls of this church was constructed from top to down direction, which is very difficult and which needs higher application of Mathematics. But why Ethiopians are unable to apply more mathematical application in current situations is a big concern. Thus, it is very important to undertake a study that foresees the possible factor, that is the relationship of mathematics achievement and mathematics self-Beliefs in the case of University students in Ethiopia.

In international large-scale assessments (ILSAs), self-efficacy, and self-concept have significant effect on student academic achievement inalmost all participating countries (
                <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-28">Marsh & Craven, 2006</xref>;

Statement of the problem

As per educational and training policy of Ethiopia (1994), numeracy, literacy, home science, health services, agriculture and civics are the focus of basic education where as research oriented education which enables to solve problem, which makes professional leader, and which fulfils societal needs is the focus of higher education. According to Ethiopian Education Development Road Map (2017–30), the curriculum should suggest teaching of science technology and math subjects corresponding to each grade level in order to bring higher order thinking skills. The growth and transformation plan -
                    <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-25">GTP2 (2016, p.189)</xref> of Ethiopia also suggests that number of students in higher education should be increased and the number of higher institutions should also be increased, and to improve the achievements of preparatory school students in mathematics and science subjects, the university should work in collaboration to schools.

Numeracy, literacy and problem solving skills can be enabled in mathematics and the emphasis in improving achievement in mathematics and science needs further detail including checking students’ mathematics self-beliefs and other motivational variables on their mathematics achievement. Thus, this study will be much more important to give the emphasis on Mathematics Learning Motivation to fulfill the GTP2 Objectives. GTP 2 also suggests to use trained and skilled man power which can empower technology transformation; the 70:30, that is 70% Natural and computational science and 30% Social Science, University students admission policy of Ethiopia should be supported by encouraging activities such as activities which bring good attitudes on primary and secondary students on math and science.

This 70: 30 program makes the enrollment natural and computational science students in University to be massive than that of Social Science students. There are many researches on mathematics learning which suggests valid mathematics instruments and specific points where students need help (
                    <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-26">Gersten
                        et al., 2005</xref>). But Mathematics curriculum does not include research results concerning the best practices beliefs that children can learn mathematics and the curriculum revision do not incorporate classroom performance (
                    <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-22">Clements, 2004b</xref>). As it has been seen from
                    <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="ref-24">EGMA (2009)</xref> report, there were differences in skill levels among students in early grade level throughout the countries. This implies there will be differences in level of motivation or self-beliefs in learning mathematics among students and thus in the higher grade level also it is not expected that all the 70% of students enrolled to be science learners in Universities of Ethiopia are high achievers in mathematics and highly motivated to learn mathematics. Thus the need to check the impact of self-beliefs on their mathematics achievement is unquestionable. Thus examining students’ level mathematics achievement in relation to their mathematics self-beliefs in tandem with the spirit of the recently introduced Ethiopian Education Development Road Map.

Despite all these factors, little is known about students’ mathematics achievement in relation to the motivation variables such as self-beliefs, expectancy values and achievement goal in the case University students of Ethiopia hence, the need for this study. Thus this study is aimed at identifying the relationship of mathematics achievement of university students with these motivational constructs in Ethiopian context.

This is study is conducted on undergraduate university students in Ethiopia in 2023. The interview was to pilot test the instruments validity. Interview was taken place at Bongo University and at Bong Education College. 9 experts, three from the field of psychology, three from the field of measurement and evaluation, and three from the field mathematics were participated in experts’ review of the MLM items and the MAT items. Also 5 respondent students from Bonga University were participated in cognitive interview. These, 5 participants, were discussed on MLM items as well as MAT items being in group and identified those items with ambiguity meanings. (see appendix 1 and 3).

Considerable effort has made to control the cofounding variables which might result in research bias. In this regard, sufficient and representative sample size was considered, appropriate statistical data analysis tool was employed, and appropriate research design, sampling technique were used.
Target population, sample and sampling techniques

The population of the study was undergraduate University students of Ethiopia. The reason to consider the undergraduate student is that most undergraduate students were taking mathematics as a common course and these students were believed to provide relevant data. The study sample was 400 randomly undergraduate university students who attend mathematics course as a common course from Addis Ababa University, from Hawassa University and from Jimma University. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the three universities, while stratified random sampling technique was used to select participants from each University and each College and each Department. Students were approached in person to take part in the study. The reason for inclusion of the three Universities were the homogeneous nature of students enrolled in Ethiopian public Universities, their being first generation Universities, the plenty of experiences of these Universities, and their being budget saving and convenient for the researcher for collecting relevant data.

The reason to have only 400 respondents is as follows:

Undergraduate students in Addis Ababa, Hawassa and Jimma Universities were the respondents of this study. The first tool was the experts’ interview concerning items of Mathematics Learning Motivation(MLM);

Nine experts, three from the psychology field, three from the measurement and evaluation field and three from the mathematics fields were made to fill the content validation form. The Experts were chosen according to their field of study from Bonga Eduction College and from Bonga University, Ethiopia.

The experts review has been taken place at Bonga University and at Bonga College. Each expert was made to put expert judgment on the domain on the degree of relevant each item to the measured domains based on the definition and relevant terminologies provided to them. 5 students selected from Bonga University were also interviewed to think aloud all the question in their group and answer Which item do they think is(are) confusing or misleading about the survey question. (see Appendix 3).

The MLM items were adapted from different related surveys and then re-developed in university students’ context in Ethiopia. The MLM is a self-report Likert-type scale which was adapted and contextualized from

At first stage 160- items based on different motivation theories was adapted and only 51 items which was validated by experts review and cognitive interview of group debriefing was retained for data collection. (see Appendix 3)

The Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) was developed by the authors and pilot tested. The items consists of all freshman mathematics contents which is given as common course for first year University students. Primarily 31 items was developed and pilot tested on 150(male= 86, Female=64) University students in Bonga University. The item is analysis by using Item response Theory. The item difficulty and discrimination indices were verified. The item characteristic curve and test information curve were employed. Finally only 25 items which fulfill these psychometric properties were retained for further data collection. (Appendix 1)

Data collection procedures

Students were selected based on stratified sampling techniques. The strata were based on the colleges of students. Students who took basics mathematics during the freshman course were randomly selected from appropriate Colleges of the three universities, namely Addis Ababa, Jima and Hawassa Universities. The randomization process is in such a way that once the Universities and the colleges of students are selected purposively, participant selection was randomly from each college by not bothering on inclusion all students in each department and in each class and section of students. Accordingly, the College of Natural Science, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, and the College of Health science were the strata from which sample was randomly selected. The questionnaire distributed in paper form. The researcher distributed the questionnaire and administered the test. In average one week of time were spent the questionnaire to be filled and the test to be administered in one University. Participants first filled MLM questioner and then they took MAT as the same time after completion of responding to the questionnaire. In average one and half hour was given to each participant to respond on the questionnaire and administer the test.

The standardized MAT was administered to undergraduate students taking the mathematics course to tap students’ mathematics achievement. In addition, students’ current cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) was also tapped as along with the demographic characteristics of respondents.

Data analysis

For pilot test of MAT, the data was analyzed by using experts’ review, cognitive interview, item characteristic curve (ICC), test information curve, difficulty and discrimination indices by means of the application of IRT. The 9 experts: 3 experts from the measurement and evaluation field, 3 experts from the psychology field, and 3 experts from the mathematics field were participated on experts’ were also reviewed of the MAT items. The results of experts review reveal that all the 31 items have good face validity; 5 students were participated in cognitive interview of type group debriefing. The results of cognitive interview revealed that all the 31 items match with the intended meaning to measure the construct; the item discrimination indices and item difficulty indices by using the application of IRT results to suppressed 5 items from the list. Thus 25 items were retained for further data collection tool. The ICC and the test information indicted all the 25 items were considerably acceptable. Accordingly, 25 items were retained for the main data collection.

Three phases (item development, scale development, and scale evaluation) with nine steps of item development and validation was employed in this study.

The first phase was the Item development concerned with the initial set of questions for an eventual scale, which consists of (i) identification of the domain(s) and item generation, and (ii) consideration of content validity. The second phase was scale development that is converting or modifying individual items into a harmonious and measuring construct, consists of (iii) pre-testing questions, (iv) sampling and survey administration, (v) item reduction, and (vi) extraction of latent variables. The final stage is the scale evaluation, which contains: (vii) tests for dimensionality, (vii) tests for reliability, and (ix) tests for validity. For these, the Structural equation modeling and Explanatory analysis (EFA) was employed. Item Response Theory (IRT) and Latent Construct Theory (LCT) were used. The software

The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied, that is the commonly used analysis of goodness of fit was applicable to check the validity and fitness of the tools in relation to the academic achievement. That is, the results of commonly used goodness-of-fit indices namely, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI), comparative fit index (CFI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), and chi-square (

In case the fit of a model is not adequate, it has become common practice to modify the model, by deleting parameters that are not significant, and adding parameters that improve the fit. Thus, in this study, modification indices of the model were checked exhaustively.

Conclusion

The main aim of this study was to find out the effect of Self beliefs, Expectancy Value and Achievement Goal of Mathematics Learning Motivation on Mathematics Achievement among Ethiopian University students. The data obtained based on validated measures of math learning motivation and math achievement test subject to Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings, using SEM reveals that Math Self-beliefs, Expectancy Value, and Achievement Goal have positive relationship with Mathematics Achievement. Thus, the present finding support the claim that Mathematics self-beliefs are significant predictors of math achievement of University students in Ethiopia. Nonetheless, the finding does not support the claim that Expectancy Value and Achievement Goal influences mathematics achievement. From the findings based on Ethiopian University students, it can be concluded that Math Self-beliefs namely: Self-concept, Self-Efficacy and Self-Determination have significant influence on mathematics achievement; Expectancy value has no significant effect on Mathematics achievement; and, likewise, Achievement Goal has no significant effect on Mathematics achievement.

Overall, while mathematics self-beliefs contribute positively and significantly to mathematics achievement; the study failed to find statistically significant predictive relationship between Math achievement and the two factors, namely, Expectancy Value and Achievement Goal on Ethiopian sample of university students. Thus, it is recommend that all students, math lecturers, and university officials should pay special attention to the critical role self-belief variables i.e. self- concept, self-efficacy and self-determination as they design institutional policies and intervention strategies designed to boost math achievement. In addition, we strongly recommend future research with wider sample of students taking mathematics courses until they complete their senior year so as to capture the change and continuity in mathematics learning motivation and mathematics achievement over time.

Limitation

There are 36 Universities in Ethiopia. Eight of these Universities are categorized as the first generation Universities. Due their abundance of experience, the homogeneous nature of students enrolled in Ethiopian public Universities and their being economic and convenient for the researcher for collecting relevant data, only three top ranked first generation Universities were considered in this study, which might be the limitation of this study.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this article. This article aimed to examine the impacts of self-beliefs, EVT and achievement goals on maths achievement amongst Ethiopian tertiary students. This research provides some new knowledge on an under- represented cohort of students, however, I believe the article requires some major revisions, perhaps a rewrite before it is of publishable quality. I will outline my recommendations below:

                Overall comments:
                <list list-type="bullet">
                    <list-item>

My greatest concern is the lack of a theoretical model and framing of the study. What theories are the authors drawing on? Can they define EVT, self-beliefs, and achievement goal theory? Much research has examined the links between self-beliefs, EVT and achievement goals on maths performance however why have these not been reviewed?

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

The internal consistency of the article is lacking, for example I do not think the authors have achieved the aims of the paper. It appears that most of the article covers the psychometrics of the survey instruments rather than unpacking the relationships between self-beliefs, EVT, achievement gaols and achievement and the wider implications of these on Ethiopian university students’ maths outcomes and experiences. Also how do all these constructs tie together? They are very different theoretically, and also the use of “motivation” (the MLM) is later introduced which adds even more confusion. Can the authors narrow these constructs and focus on just one or two constructs? I think the authors are perhaps trying to do too much in one paper.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

The spelling and grammar should be corrected, ideally by a professional editor, because there are lots or errors throughout which impacts on readability and flow.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

Thera are too many acronyms in the article, I had to keep reading back to see what these meant. Consider removing some if only used once or twice in the article (e.g., CGPA and KMO perhaps?)

                    </list-item>
                </list>

                    <list-item>

Overall, I think the introduction should be rewritten, it does not really capture the essence of the paper, nor does it make an argument for the focus on self-belief, EVT and achievement goals.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

Regarding the sentence “learning mathematics requires much effort for students” what is meant by
                             this? This is a very generalized statement and probably needs to be refined, e.g., is effort defined as cognitive challenge? Or commitment, persistence? Or something else?

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

The references (e.g., Cockcroft and Hembree) in intro are old and lack relevance to today’s modern world and challenges, consider replacing with current literature and perhaps relevant to an Ethiopian context.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

The second paragraph (the Ethiopian Rock Hewn) is disconnected to the rest of article. Can this paragraph be synthesised with the aims of the article? I would also like to see a bit more on the Ethiopian context, values, and challenges.

Again, this needs to focus on the key constructs – the lack of a theoretical model makes me confused as to how the constructs selected (self-beliefs, EV, goals) link to the research problem and also how these constructs help the authors address this research problem.

                    <list-item>

Again, I was confused exactly what the authors did. The term “interview” is used, however appears that only quantitative survey instruments were used so I am confused by this term. The study design section does not report the study design e.g., was a mixed methods study design, or quantitative case study design used etc. This whole section should be rewritten.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

What were the study conditions, for example, did students complete the survey in class, and were they completed online or by hand? Did students provide informed consent, and if they were selected to participate, did they have the option to withdraw from the study without prejudice? Also, I can see from Table 1 the range of undergraduate across multiple disciplines, however there is no justification why such abroad range of student were included in a study on math education.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

Data sources and dependent variables should all be together. Keep all the descriptions of the survey tools together.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

The reasoning for 400 participants can be reduced to a couple of sentences to justify the sample size.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

The section
                            Data collection instruments is very wordy, perhaps use a heading for each instrument and clearly identify the types of survey questions asked (give some examples for each instrument) and where the instrument was derived from. Also, I am unsure how the independent variables (EVT, goals, self-beliefs) were measured, there is minimal description tools to measure these. I am confused why the MLM instrument was used and how this connects to the aforementioned constructs? Also why the focus on motivation here anyway because this did not seem to be an aim of the study.

1. Self-beliefs, expectancy values, and achievement goals should be defined and thoroughly discussed in the Statement of the Problem section. Discussions on self-determination, self-efficacy, and self-concept are needed, as these sub-constructs of self-beliefs differ from one another. Also, provide a discussion explaining why these variables were chosen, so that it does not appear as if they were selected arbitrarily.

2. Following the format/structure of the paper where research hypotheses are presented, discussions must be provided per research hypothesis, explaining how it was developed from the literature review. The literature review for each research hypothesis must be included so that readers will understand how prior studies informed the hypotheses posited in this study.

3. The random selection of participants is unclear. How was the random selection process carried out? What specific procedures were employed to select the students randomly? For example, did the authors acquire a student list and then randomly select students from the list? In other words, it is not enough to simply state that the selection is random; the paper must explicitly state how it was carried out.

4. It is difficult to assess the unique contribution of the paper since it lacks discussions of prior research.

5. In connection with comment #4, the study did not provide a theoretical framework, which consequently means it did not offer theoretical implications of the findings.

6. There are grammatical mistakes in the paper that hinder the clarity of discussions. Language editing is highly recommended.

I have read the article several times. Each reading further convinced me that the research method of manuscript is problematic. Please let me elaborate.

1. The conceptual framework of the article is insufficient. I cannot access enough information about the variables addressed in the article. This situation leads to certain problems for the reader. For instance, what is the significance of the article? What gap in the literature does the article fill? These questions remain unanswered.

2.The article lacks significant statistical information, which can be summarized as follows:

a) While the article claims the development of a mathematics achievement test, there is insufficient information about the test. For instance, item discrimination, item difficulty, and reliability coefficients have not been calculated. The article states that these values are good, but they have not been provided.

b) The exploratory factor analyses are observed in the study. However, the article states that only confirmatory factor analysis was conducted. This discrepancy highlights a classification problem in the conducted analyses. Moreover, both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses exhibit shortcomings. For instance, the absence of normality assumptions, correlation coefficients between factors, correlation matrix, Average Variance Extracted values, discriminant validity, and composite reliability is notable. The failure to calculate these values indicates why certain values are low in the confirmatory factor analysis, such as CFI and TLI.

3. The discussion section is notably insufficient, lacking a thorough comparison between the obtained results and existing literature.

Is the study design appropriate and does the work have academic merit?

No

If applicable, is the statistical analysis and its interpretation appropriate?

No

Are all the source data and materials underlying the results available?

No

Is the work clearly and accurately presented and does it engage with the current literature?

No

Are the conclusions drawn adequately supported by the results?

No

Are sufficient details of methods and analysis provided to allow replication by others?

The article addresses effects of self-beliefs on mathematics achievement of undergraduate university students in Ethiopia. It thus examines an important and interesting field based on a suitable database. However, the article has not yet reached its full potential. I have some concerns and suggestions for revision which I list below:
                <list list-type="order">
                    <list-item>

The article lacks a theoretical framework. Although there is some information about the investigated problem, the variables analyzed are not elaborated theoretically. Key constructs such as self-beliefs, expectancy-value, and achievement goal need to be defined theoretically and synthesized based on existing literature.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

The hypotheses formulated should be derived from theoretical considerations and existing empirical results. In the current version, it is not clear to me on which considerations the hypotheses are based.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

As far as I understand it, the article is concerned on the one hand with the validation of the data collection instruments used and on the other hand with examining the hypotheses. In my opinion, these two research aims should be emphasized more clearly.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

The methods need to be suited to the research questions and hypotheses. As the validation of the data collection instruments is not formulated as a research goal, the methods section is confusing for me to read. From my perspective there is too much emphasis on sampling methods and too less emphasis on what was done concretely to realize the study.

                    </list-item>
                    <list-item>

From my perspective, there are too many methodical and other considerations in the results section. Please try to be more precise what the results of this study are. For example, most of the section “Confirmatory factor Analysis" consists of methodological aspects. Table 3 and Figure 1 mentioned here seem to be results of an exploratory factor analysis.

The implications formulated for teachers, curriculum designers, ministry of education, and other stakeholders go too far. I recommend being more cautious with causal interpretations of the results derived from cross-sectional data. When you state that “it is recommend that all students, math lecturers, and university officials should pay special attention to the critical role self-belief variables i.e. self- concept, self-efficacy and self-determination as they design institutional policies and intervention strategies designed to boost math achievement” it would be much more beneficial if you gave some hints on how to realize this.
